Diggers Junior Program Bears Fruit Once Again

Congratulations to Damon Rootes and Luke Corlis who have just been selected

Another Conquest for the Diggers Duo

in the North Coast Zone U17 cricket team. The pair were the only two players selected from the Coffs Harbour area. The Diggers Cricket Club Duo will travel to Raymond Terrace on October 26th to 28th to contest the NSW Country Championships. Damon and Luke both put in excellent performances over the weekend trials at Coffs Coast Sport & Leisure Park to earn selection. This selection bears added weight due to the fact that both boys are still eligible to play U16’s and therefore will also be considered during the upcoming Bradman Cup trials. Here at Diggers we are sure this selection will be a stepping stone for bigger and better things to come. Damon and Luke are also expected to feature strongly in the Diggers Cricket Club First Eleven to contest the Bill Amos Memorial Shield under the CHDCA competition.

Diggers Cricket Club prides itself on the success of it’s junior program and our up and coming stars  are continually achieving similar results. We currently have a fantastic crop of junior players competing in every division of the CHDJCA Competition plus a healthy In2Cricket program catering for the younger 5-8 age group.

Diggers Cricket Club is currently taking registrations for the upcoming season and details can be found below. Players from ages 5 to open can register at any of the following sessions;

COFFS HARBOUR JUNIOR CRICKET

COFFS WINNERS: Damon Rootes, Nathan Wendt, Zach Symons, Nathan Gett, Luke Corlis.

Cricketers from across the North Coast last week participated in the annual North Coast Zone Under 17s Carnival which was held in Murwillumbah from July 2-4.

Three cricket councils, North Coast (NCCC), Mid North Coast (MNCCC) and Far North Coast (FNCCC) were represented with Far North Coast playing two sides.

Luke Corlis, Nathan Gett, Damon Rootes, Zach Symons and Nathan Wendt were all selected from Coffs Harbour to represent the NCCC side, who successfully took out the carnival winning all three games.

The first game was against FNCCC (Phelps) and NCCC batted first and were able to score 151 runs. A very impressive bowling and fielding display saw FNCCC all out for 68. Opening bowler Zach Symons took two key wickets and Damon Rootes bowled tightly to also take two. Nathan Wendt was also rewarded with a wicket.

The next game against MNCCC was close, however, NCCC again proved too strong with their bowling and fielding with MNCCC all out for 80 off 32 overs.

Nathan Wendt was again impressive taking two wickets with Zach Symons, Luke Corlis, Damon Rootes and Nathan Gett all taking a wicket each.

NCCC got off to a good start with the bat with Damon Rootes (21) and Luke Corlis (15), however, a middle order collapse with five wickets for three runs had the boys on the back foot. NCCC lower order batted well to secure the win.

The final game against FNCCC (Gilchrist) had NCCC batting first to score 177. FNCCC were all out for 110 off 33 overs. Luke Corlis had a man of the match performance with 49 runs and four wickets. Nathan Wendt, Nathan Gett and Damon Rootes all took a wicket a piece.

Dierick’s team tops

Coffs Harbour’s Trent Dierick in action during last week’s Australian Indoor Cricket Championships.

STAR Coffs Harbour cricketer Trent Dierick has another trophy to add to the mantelpiece, with his New South Wales under-18 team winning the Australian Indoor Cricket Championships in Brisbane.

The Blues swept away South Australia in the grand final by 31 runs after a week of tough matches.

The Blues finished on top of the table after the preliminary rounds and were well placed heading into the finals.

“We were expecting our traditional rivals, Queensland, to be our toughest opponents but it was South Australia that provided our stiffest opposition,” Dierick said.

“The difference in the end was the Blues’ ability to handle the pressure situations. Everyone kept a cool head in what was a great team effort.”

The win was New South Wales’ second consecutive under-18 title.

Dierick is one of seven players still eligible to play next year, when the Blues will aim for a third straight under-18 crown.

“The Australian championships will be held in Sydney next year and the boys are keen to make it a hat-trick of wins in front of our home crowd,” Dierick said.
